How many times has a crash helmet saved your life?

Unread post by steve-e »

I don't really want to explain why this poll is going on, apart from saying it's something I read earlier from the no lid brigade.
I was a member of MAG and campaigned for choice, knowing that I would wear one anyway but it should be down to choice.

So.. has a lid saved your life? I hope the way the questions are worded isn't at all leading :D

Hmmmm, Have you had an embarassing moment as well ?

I suppose I have been lucky enough not have needed to test the services of a proper road race helmet during my time ( so far ) as as a passenger,,,But I really could have done with one on the eve before the Marlboro Clubmans round at Brands Hatch circa 1989.
I had been drafted in to help transport my mate and his LC 250 and it's rider Ian Newton to Brands for the first round of that years series,,,,,and to cut a long story a couple of years earlier I had got to know and love Eddie Roberts and his new wife Sally through Metzeller Tyres and the Manx GP the Rumble's and Kimoco blah, blah, blah

Practice goes so well I can't even remember what happened and so I am enjoying the night in the Kentagon as you do when I meet up with Sally Roberts who tells me Eddie has decided to fly his kite else where,,,,I try to sound surprised but know full well he is dipping his bread at another table ( so to speak),,,,,,I was greeted with the full pint over my head when I said I knew all about it ( but it had FA to do with me )....

I went to bed with my hair smelling of Lager....

Eddie I belive is doing well in the States, and Sally was last seen doing her thing in the Moto GP paddock working for Ten Kate Honda.

Regards,

Fritz,,,,,,,

just got into racing the old sidecars when I was offered my first proper ride at Kirkis

So wearing a lid wins. Thanks people :D

Now all you passengers, start wearing back protectors too!! That's another story and I reckon Fritz will have a good one for that too :D

Funny question really.

I think it should be. How many times has a helmet protected your head from injury. I mean if you were dead you couldn't answer anyway.

Or if you had banged your head you may not have died, but without the lid you may have done ! Does this make any sense how would you know ?

Best time was when I was working lots of hours working at east midland airport, used to ride the bike home on the back routes to have some fun ;) one nice stretch set of winding bends leading on to a straight, where you could really open it up 8-) 8-) as I came out of the last bend momentarily fell asleep eyes opened to see a car in front of me, which should have been ok as it was a fast road.
only problem was that he had stopped to let a tractor turn into the field and took his foot off the brakes !!!! by the time I have realised I know that I am not going to stop in time   look to the right on coming traffic go that way I'm dead, look to left irrigation ditch and bridge I'm dead  last option hit the car   head hits boot after what I'm told was an impressive somersault head hits the bonnet   Wished I'd had a jock box on!!!! :? Helmet did its job pity about the rest of me  bike was stook in the back of the car   to add insult to injury I got three points on my licence and a £300 fine weeks wages back then for driving with out due care and attention...cheek I told them I knew I was going to hit him

I should start a new thread on that one  I've hit some impressive things on bikes  Went over the central reservation on an XS650 and once the lorry hit the petrol tank we couldn't find it, or the battery

I've had some good ones as well and in cars  Had an RD200DX I was off that thing more than I was on it  because the frame used to twist it was like a spring snapping back if you hit a manhole in the wet
remember once it spat me off and I travelled down the road on my hands and knees wondering where my bike had gone and this car coming straight at me, the guy stopped lept out and started shouting "It wasn't me it wasn't me" not checking to see if I was ok  that bike finally died when it seized on me as I was in full lean at 70mph just as I was joining the A38 destroying itself against the central reservation

I bought a CZ 250 off Lenny for 80 quid, spent almost a year commuting on it til it chunked itself on the way back from Oxford one day after work so took it offroad not to make a mess of the M25 with premix.. What WAS I thinking? :D Sold it back to Len for 100 though :D It was named the black pig.. really we're taking this off topic :P

Don't have a choice, compulsory here for Rider and Passenger

Shortest length of helmet ownership before total destruction was less than two weeks, racing a solo leading the class for the meeting and then it seized and tossed me on my head and smashed most of the left side in
