Re: 2024 Sidecar Festival Oschersleben Oct 4/5/6
World preview from Mark Walters
Oschersleben, Germany.
Preview.
It has been a long eight weeks since the last FIM Sidecar World Championship round at Assen. The sidecar teams will be keen to get back on track and fight for the championship.
The 3.667 km circuit of Oschersleben will host the next round. The circuit known as “Motorsport Arena Oschersleben” is in Northern Germany not far from Magdeburg.
The top three teams in the championship have been battling it out with nothing in it. Championship leaders Markus Schlosser and Luca Schmidt have been toing and froing between wins and seconds between second place team in the championship, Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau, there is only seven points between the two teams, Schlosser/Schmidt on 167 points, Payne and Rousseau on 160. There is not a lot between the two teams, but it has looked like Schlosser and Schmidt have had top speed advantage over Payne and Rousseau. Oschersleben is a technical circuit so maybe top speed advantage will not be an advantage.
The third place team of Sam and Tom Christie have 126 points, it seems quite a lot of points off the two teams in front but 41 points adrift can be well increased over the weekend, anything is well doable here in Oschersleben. The Christie brothers have been working hard and been consistent over the season so far.
Double championship winners Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement are sitting in fourth place with 111 points. The team this year are having weekends of two half’s. Their qualifying and race one results are not what they want, they are finding it hard to get machine setup and performance. But come the end of the weekend, race two, they are up mixing it with the leaders, if they can get it all sorted from the start of the weekend I am sure they will be back on the top step.
Pekka Paivarinta and Adam Christie have 87 points in fifth place. Maybe the team are a bit off the leading teams, but, Paivarinta and Christie have been consistently going faster than before, good lap times, also this is their first year on the Adolf RS chassis, the team have been making improvements bit by bit and seem to be getting on well with their machine.
Only 4 points off Paivarinta and Christie is Bennie Streuer and Kevin Kolsch. They have not had a good start to the season but now seem to be getting things sorted, a visit to the podium in Assen fair boosted the team’s moral. They will be hoping for the same in Oschersleben.
Father and son team of Ted and Vincent Peugeot have 69 points in seventh place. The team have had a mixed season so far, machine problems have hampered the teams progress this year. Having said that, they will be on a high having won their domestic French championship recently. Also they could win the German championship.
Eighth in the championship is Paul Leglise and Marjorie Cescutti, they have 49 points, another team who have had machine problems throughout the season, but they have worked away steadily and overcome these problems.
Only two points off Leglise and Cescutti is Lukas Wyssen and Ema Salmon, they have 47 points. The team had a rough time in Assen, there was contact with Lennard Gottlich and Lucas Krieg in qualifying at Assen, this resulted with damage to their chassis, they did however manage to continue. Not so for Gottlich and Krieg, their weekend was over, this was a big blow for the team they are only 5 points adrift of Wyssen and Salmon in the championship. The second race in Assen was not good for Wyssen and Salmon, passenger Salmon parted company with the machine and was taken to the medical center for checks, she had arm and ankle injuries. With a good long break since then, she will be ready to race in Oschersleben.
Only eleven points separate the next five teams, Rupert Archer with Thomas Hofer in the chair for the last meetings are getting on well together, the team are working well, they have 32 points. Only three points off is Sam and Jack Laidlow, they have 29 points, they had a high speed crash in Assen, both Sam and Jack were okay, but they decided not to race the next day. Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson have 24 points, the team have been going well throughout the season but they have not had the results they wanted. Only one point adrift from Cable and Richardson is Patrick Werkstetter and Valentine Pirat, they have had a good season although the points may not show this.
Markus Venus and Ondrej Sedlacek have 12 points they are having a good season, this being their first together.
Great to see Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes back in Assen, they are going to finish the season, they went well in Assen, unfortunately in the second race in Assen, when they were battling up at the front, they had to pull out with brake problems.
With only 2 points separating Rogier Weekers and Remco Moes, Pierre Leguen and Leopold Rouby, Raymond Leijdekkers and Calvin Leijdekkers, this could be a good battle between these teams for points in the championship, even if they are at the bottom end of the points table.
Two teams coming to Oschersleben to mix it with the regular teams is Luke Williams with Belgian passenger Ruben Janssens, and Lewis Nicol with his French passenger Clement Conil, they will be hoping for a good trouble free weekend and enjoy the experience racing at this level.
Saturday the the 5th there will be a12 lap race, with a 21 lap race on the Sunday the 6th.
