A UNIQUE TAKE ON THE ISLE OF MAN TT RACES
by the man with the mic CHARLIE LAMBERT
The decade between 2004 and 2014 was one of the most dramatic eras in the century-old history of the Isle of Man TT Races. It began with the races in decline, attendances dwindling and many observers fearing that they would soon be killed off by a combination of rising costs, political correctness and practical difficulties. But a triumphant celebration of the races' centenary in 2007 launched the TT into a new era of success. Road racing became established as a specialist sport in its own right as well as a credible test of skill, nerve and engineering for modern riders and manufacturers. Media interest rocketed, a feature film took cinemas by storm worldwide and a new generation of technocrats hastened to the island to test the latest developments in zero-emissions motorbike propulsion. All this took place under the gaze of Charlie Lambert, appointed TT anchor commentator by Manx Radio in 2004. In TT Talking Charlie tells the story of the TT's sensational upturn, and simultaneously lifts the lid on his own role behind the microphone - the pressures, the controversies, the laughs and the sadness that go with being the man at the heartbeat of the world's most famous road races.
The book is accompanied by a foreword by John McGuinness, 20-times TT winner and holder of the outright lap record since 2004 who says, ‘the biggest compliment I can pay Charlie is that he became an iconic voice at the TT'.
TT Talking is published by Veloce Publishing at £14.99 and can be obtained at bookshops and through their website http://www.veloce.co.uk . This year's TT runs from May 24 to June 7.
