Useful stuff for first time people at the TT

Unread post by steve-e »

This has come up while I've been talking to Jo tonight. The usual stuff that when you go to the Island the first time you don't know exists (or doesn't)

I spent years shopping at Shoprite not knowing there was a Tesco in town, or a B&Q just round the corner. The best chippy nearest to the paddock, the great places to eat Jo and myself have spent nearly a year (11 months and 2 days now) exploring.

I'll start it with the Tesco. It's obvious to people who are regulars there or like me are a frequent visitor but if you've not been before you wouldn't know, or know how easy it is to get to. If you're driving it's possibly simplest to go down to quarterbridge and turn left but there's traffic that way and traffic lights, the roadworks will hopefully be finished by TT.
Instead turn left at the crossroads at St.Ninians, take the first right (Woodbourne Road) and go down there past the schoolfield on the right down towards the terrace, where there's a good chip shop on your left - The Terrace Chippy. When you see the shops on your left keep going til you see Athol Street. Turn right there and within seconds you'll see the train station arches, at the bottom of there is Tesco.

That's me started.... Manxies put me right :D And then other good places.. paparazzi? B&Q?
Italian restaurants (my favourite), Indian, Chinese if you like that kind of thing...

There was last year the paddock laundry, with washing machines and tumble dryers, so be armed with £1 coins, it was £2 per wash last year l think. Housed in the same building as the showers. Tumble driers were great when it rained. :D

Don't look for an Argos! It's a bloke shopping thing, reserve at argos, pick it up on the way home.. doesn't happen on the island.

Wouldn't the nearest cashpoint to the paddock be at Shoprite ? (So long as you go out the back way rather than down the main roads).

Personally I NEVER shop at Tesco... Shoprite stocks local stuff and is just as cheap. It's a local company and pays tax here (unlike the big companies from across).
Also there are Co-op branches, Spar shops (one at Union Mills), and several independent shops attached to garages (including the one at St Ninians).
Rant over................................ (for now, anyway..lol)

Directions to the Manor! Grass triangle on the startline, head up that road, take the first left at the top, keep on that road and you'll soon see the Manor.

Go a bit further and take the next left after the Manor, ahead you'll see the Police Station. Opposite is a handy and good row of shops - bakers, butchers, Spa, Chinese. I use these a lot, all good.
