Outfit on Frodsham Marshes back in the late 80s

Unread post by Equipe 53 »

Wonder if the driver / passenger who were out testing their outfit on the Marshes is a member of the forum, I was working that area at the time & you could hear it all over the village, my sergeant ( a right +rick ) also heard it & sent me off to find it, I found the source of the noise & had a quick word with the lads & told them to load up the outfit & get off the Marshes in case my supervision arrived, he'd have found some excuse to give them grief, I left them to it & went on my way & told him that the source of the noise had gone before I got there, no harm done & everyone was happy.

Also had to go to a solo rider / racer who lived in Frodsham, Mainwaring, his newly wed neighbours were complaining about the noise his bike was making from his garage, they had just moved in & had a wicker couch & snow white brand new deep piled carpet. Me & my colleague sat on their couch & it broke then we noticed loads of muddy boot prints on their carpet, bet they were sorry they'd bothered.
I still hear a Mainwaring in BSB is it his son, Howie I think, but if memory serves me that was the name of guy who we spoke to, who I reckon would be a bit old now.
Thanks
Dave

Can you be a bit more specific when you say Frodsham marshes .only a 'google' search bring up many options related to Frodsham..

I know it may not be the same place but a lot of unofficial machine testing used to take place at Burtonwood (M62 @ Warrington) where the old US Airbase was situated, before they put a stop to folks having a bit of fun....

Hi Fritz

This from google gives a better idea of location.
The Frodsham Marshes are located to the West of Frodsham in Cheshire where the River Mersey meets the River Weaver and the Manchester Ship Canal. The marshes offer excellent bird watching opportunities and a number of rare birds can be seen throughout the changing seasons.

Access to the marshes can be gained via Marsh Lane at the end of Frodsham High Street or via Godscroft Lane adjecent to Helsby High School.
Thanks

Could have been Graham Hilditch testing his outfit, he was very local being from Runcorn.
We use to test at RAF Sealand near Chester in the mid 70's.

Hi Dave, no it was on the actual WW2 aerodrome where the industrial estate is now built, over the road to the existing RAF Sealand. I think the likes of Micky Whitton tested there aswell????

Graham Hilditch is now doing sprints on his old weslake engined outfit and is in the process of building another frame in his garage.

Another local sidecar rider was Neville Riley " Nadger" he was also from Runcorn, but I have not heard anything about him for years now.
There is a photo of Nadger in the photo's section, book photo's picture 3 Richard Rollings. Roger Marshall is in the chair with Nadger behind the outfit.

Yep, Steve lives in ship street, don't know if Howie still lives in Frodsham as I have not seen him around for ages.
