  • The new all-female racing sidecar team of Maria Costello MBE and Julie Canipa got their season off to a great start as they prepare to race at the Isle of Man TT.

    The new duo are delighted with their first two outings of the season at Oulton Park and Mallory Park.

    Maria Costello MBE is aiming to become the first woman to race both sidecar and solo machinery at the same Isle of Man TT meeting after announcing her partnership with Julie Canipa for the 2019 season.

    The Northamptonshire racer celebrated International Women’s Day by securing acceptance to race the sidecar at this year’s TT with Julie Canipa as her new passenger, who last year was awarded the Susan Jenness Trophy by the TT Supporters’ Club for her fantastic efforts in the event.

    The pair will form a formidable duo as an all-female team. Costello made her sidecar road racing debut at the Southern 100 road races on the Isle of Man last year while Canipa started her TT career alongside Doug Chandler in 2015 and teamed up with Greg Lambert in 2017 to claim her best IoM finish of eighth.


  • MARIA COSTELLO MBE is to be unveiled as the first female president of the TT Riders Association in its 66-year history.

    The Northamptonshire motorcycle racer will be handed the chain of office at the association’s annual luncheon at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham early next month.

    Costello, who was made an MBE in 2009 in recognition of her career as one of Britain’s leading female racers, follows in the footsteps of a host of big name stars of the sport, including more than 40 world champions and racers with more than 145 TT wins between them.

    Freddie Frith was the first president, while Charles Mortimer, John Surtees MBE, Joey Dunlop OBE and Nick Jefferies are among the previous holders of the prestigious role. Costello will assume the presidency from Richard ‘Milky’ Quayle who is one of only three Manxmen to have won a TT.


    Maria Costello MBE, known for her motorcycle racing and TT successes, will be adding car racing to her already busy 2018 race schedule.

    After a taste of four wheeled racing at last year’s Silverstone Classic, Maria has signed up to compete in the Historic Racing Drivers’ Club, running the HDRC ‘Works’ Austin A30 Academy Car.

    Maria Costello MBE has continued her run of success with an impressive fourth place in the prestigious Classic Senior TT at the Bennetts Isle of Man Classic TT.

    She came close to taking another Classic TT podium on the back of two podium finishes in the Cup 600 class of the British Sidecar Championship at Thruxton, and a top-10 finish in the Supertwin class at the Ulster Grand Prix.

    Maria Costello and her sidecar passenger Kirsty Hauxwell took 4th in class in the final sidecar race at Aintree on Saturday, 15th July, earning silverware and recording the pair’s best finish yet as an all-female sidecar team.

    The duo took advantage of a free weekend in the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship to attend the Ace of Aintree event, making the most of valuable track-time with their JG Speedfit / Cool Milk LCR sidecar outfit. Despite its being Hauxwell’s local track, racing at Aintree was a new experience for Maria, as was running on Avon’s wet tyres when wet weather predominated.

    The JG Speedfit/Cool Milk all-female sidecar team of Maria Costello and Kirsty Hauxwell, made their Mallory Park debut in Round 5 of the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship.

    With over 20 years of road racing experience, Maria Costello is well known to motorsport aficionados for her many achievements, including her MBE for services to motorcycling and achieving the first female podium in a race around the Isle of Man TT.

    Given that she typically rides up to 12 different solo race bikes in one season, buying and racing an LCR F2 sidecar in the 600cc ‘Cup’ class is something of a departure for Maria.

    Motorcycling legend Maria Costello MBE is pairing up with Kirsty Hauxwell for her sidecar debut at the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship at Oulton Park this weekend.

    The Costello / Hauxwell pairing will be the first all-female sidecar team to join the Hyundai Heavy Industries British championship and they will be hoping to compete in the 600CC Cup under the banner of the JG Speedfit Kawasaki team.

    Maria Costello MBE made her long-awaited three-wheel debut when she took to the Brands Hatch circuit driving an F1 sidecar with team-mate and passenger Harry Payne.

    The test at the Kent circuit took place in advance of her entry in the Sidecar Bonanza at Cadwell Park on October 22-23, where she is set to make her competitive debut in sidecar racing.

    Maria Costello is a legend in the motorcycle world, her amazing achievements have been recognised at the highest levels - 

    In 2009 she became the female motorcycle solo racer to become a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), awarded to her by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles.
    She was the first woman solo racer to stand on the podium in a race around the Isle of Man TT course, when she finished third in the 2005 Ultra-Lightweight race at the Manx Grand Prix.

    So what is the next challenge for Maria? The answer - three wheels on a Formula Two 600cc sidecar.
