Preview from Mark Walters

“Championship for the taking”

The last round of the 2024 FIM Sidecar World Championship will once again finish at the 4.182 km circuit of Estoril in Portugal. It is late in the year, could the weather have a say in the championship? Let’s hope we can have some winter sun for the deciding round. There will be two races, both on Sunday the 10th November, a 10 lap race starting at 11:15 local time. The last race of the season, 17 laps, starting at 15:10 local time.

With only seven points separating the two top teams of Markus Schlosser and Luca Schmidt, Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau, this will be crunch time. Estoril has been kind to both drivers, Schlosser sealed his 2021 world championship title here, and Payne won his first GP race here in the same year. Both teams have been battling it out throughout the 2024 season and it has come down to this last round for the title.

Third in the championship is Sam and Tom Christie, they have 136 points so far, they can’t catch the two top teams, they had bad luck at the last round in Oschersleben, a DNF in race two put them under pressure from the fourth place team of Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement. Only three points separate the two teams. However, Ellis and Clement will not be contesting the last round here at Estoril, this means that the Christie Brothers will stay third in the championship barring any major problems. I say this because Pekka Paivarinta and Adam Christie are sitting in fifth place with 114 points; mathematically it could be possible that Paivarinta and Christie, if they have two good high scoring results in both races could steal third from the Christie Brothers, if they hit problems. And with no Ellis and Clement fourth in the championship is possible too.

Bennie Streuer and Kevin Kolsch have come good towards the end of the season getting podium places, exept for a DNF last time out in Oschersleben. They will be hoping to go out on a high; they are sitting in sixth with 96 points.

Father and son team Ted and Vincent Peugeot are in seventh place with 84 points, the team have worked hard over the season and overcome a few problems, maybe not where they want to be in the championship, but they secured the German and French championships this year. Unfortunatly another team not attending Estoril.

Lukas Wyssen and Ema Salmon are sitting in eighth place with 66 points. They will be hoping to finish their season well. A great experience for passenger Salmon as this year is her first at this level of racing.

Paul Leglise and Marjorie Cescutti have 57 points in ninth place, again another team who have worked hard and overcome a few problems. Leglise likes Estoril and usually goes well here.

Rounding off the top ten is Lennard Gottlich and Lucas Krieg. Gottlich and Krieg will not be at Estoril so they will stay tenth.

Rupert Archer will finish the season with passenger Thomas Hofer; the pair have gelled well since they paired up. They come to Estoril twelfth in the championship; good results here may see them continue in the future.

Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes made a welcome return to the championship in Assen. Despite having machine problems they still managed a podium place at the last round in Oschersleben, I am sure they will be going all out for good results here in Estoril.

Pierre Leguen and Leopold Rouby, Rogier Weekers and Remco Moes, Raymond and Calvin Leijdekkers will make the trip to Estoril, and with only two points separating the three teams, they will be battling till the end.

It is a depleted grid but the fight for top honors will be hard fought for. Will Schlosser add another championship to his name and a first for Schmidt or will it be a first for Payne and Rousseau, Estoril again will decide who will be champion.

Qualifying report from Mark Walters

“Payne and Rousseau on pole”

With all technical checks done, adjustments to machines done, the sun was shining bright. Although a depleted grid for this the last round in Estoril, the action has been hot and the lap times have been coming down.

Qualifying one saw the sidecar teams take to the track, Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau were on the pace from word go. They were steadily getting faster as the session continued; they would come out tops with a 1:46.198. Markus Schlosser and Luca Schmidt were not far off Payne and Rousseau, their time was 1:46.628, however, Schlosser and Schmidt had some brake issues, not what the team wanted, they have to look into this problem before Q2. The third fastest time went to Sam and Tom Christie, they did a 1:47.109, they were happy with this and with no problems they are hoping for better in Q2. Pekka Paivarinta and Adam Christie had a good Q1, they set a time of 1:47.109, they are looking for a bit better in Q2, some mapping with fuel might help them. Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes were going well but unfortunately they pulled into pit lane with a technical problem early on in the session, but they set the fifth fastest time, a 1:47.637, they hope to better this in Q2. Lukas Wyssen and Ema Salmon set the sixth fastest time, a 1:48.595; they were not too happy with this and will make adjustments for Q2. Bennie Streuer and Ferry Segers had a vibration from the back wheel which hampered their qualifying session, but they set a time of 1:48.790, they hope they can rectify this problem for Q2. Rupert Archer and Thomas Hofer set a time of 1:49.315 they were reasonably happy with this but they hope Q2 will be better for them. Paul Leglise and Marjorie Cescutti have been trying a new fairing which the team find better to what they have had, but they have to get a good fueling setup as they have a new airbox too, they set a time of 1:49.726. Pierre Leguen and Leopold Rouby were happy with their Q1; they set a time of 1:53.189, fastest they have done at this circuit. Raymond and Calvin Leijdekkers set a time of 2:00.352; they are pleased to be racing here at this great circuit, they are happy, but did have some small problems in this qualifying session. Rogier Weekers and Oceane Bataille round off the field with a time of 2:01.326. The team are really happy to be racing here with their own built machine, and this is the first time that passenger Bataille has raced at this level.

Q2 was a frantic affair for the top two teams; it looked like they had the race day mixed up. Schlosser/Schmidt led Payne and Rousseau for most of the session, both teams improved on their Q1 times, Schlosser and Schmidt were happier with their braking for this session, but still Payne and Rousseau come out on top with a time of 1:46.081 to Schlosser/Schmidt’s time of 1:46.188. Both teams of the Christie Brothers and Paivarinta and Christie did not improve their times which were identical in Q1, both 1:47.109. Reeves and Wilkes did not improve either so they stay where they are. Wyssen and Salmon were very happy with Q2 they improved with a time of 1:47.793. Streuer and Segers improved, but they are still not happy with this. Rupert Archer and Thomas Hofer had a disaster; they blew an engine leaving them taking no more part in Q2. Leglise and Cescutti were happier in Q2; they improved with a time of 1:49.445. Out of the last three teams only the Leijdekkers’s improved their Q1 time, this was a 1:59.730.

Two races tomorrow to decide the championship, the first a 10 lap sprint starting at 11.15, local time, the second a 17 lap race starting at 15.10, local time.
