Round Five goes north of the border with title chase closer than ever
The Scottish race fans always give the F1 Sidecars an enthusiastic welcome when they travel to Fife’s Knockhill circuit this coming weekend. Their own World Champion Jock Taylor cut his teeth on this demanding and undulating track. There is therefore a huge following for the three-wheelers at Knockhill.
Approaching the half-way point of the series, young guns Ricky Stevens and Ryan Charlwood are back on top of the table, after two fine rides at Snetterton in the previous round. The AOS Be Wiser Kawasaki pair has racked up one hundred and ten points, just one race win clear of the chasing duo of Andy Peach/Charlie Richardson on their L&W Contractors Kawasaki. A win race two victory in Norfolk put Peach’s championship challenge firmly on track. Local interest will focus on the Express Tyres/Blinkbonny Kawasaki of Steve Kershaw/Rob Wilson, who are having their best F1 season ever, as they sit firmly in third place ahead of former champion and series leader Roger Lovelock/Aki Aalto (Driverwolf BMW). Lovelock had a shocker in Round four and had to sit out the proceedings after mechanical problems and a crash.
Behind them, the next few crews are split by just a handful of points, with the Birchall Brothers leading the pack, on the fifty points they lifted with a double victory on round one. Whilst they and World Champion Tim Reeves/Greg Cluze have registered for the series, they are not expected to compete in Knockhill. However, such is the uncertainty surrounding both these crews and their other race commitments; do not be surprised if they do make an appearance. Birchalls have already stated their intention to focus on the road scene with the F2 for the early part of the season, and Reeves has been very busy winning World Championship races of late. Nonetheless, where there is no World clash, both teams are eligible to chase points and prize money.
A very full race programme for British Superbikes and several other support classes will mean the F1 Sidecar races are spread over two days, with live TV coverage on Sunday. The Motors TV highlights show will be aired approximately ten days later with all the best of the action.
Standings into Knockhill – Stevens/Charlwood 110, Peach/Richardson 87.5, Stevens/Kershaw 74.5, Lovelock/Aalto 67, Birchall/Birchall 50, Ian Guy/Ken Edwards/Dan Evanson (L&W Suzuki) 48.5, Ben Holland/Lee Watson (Finning Cat Kawasaki)i 48, Tim Reeves/Greg Cluze (Team E-Aide Motorsport Kawasaki) 45, Tony Brown/Sam Christie (Paymundo.com Kawasaki) 43.5.
