I was told, many years ago, that the 'K' was painted on the tree to draw attention to the 'emergent kerb'.

Dont know how long the K been there but my old man talked about THE kerb. Wouldnt like to hit it with the sidecar wheel. Keith it is a big kerb lol.

As Dicky understands it, a competitor painted it on the tree many years ago to remind himself where that kerb was and the other competitors found it so useful that it was just maintained. Originally just by competitors apparently, but now that it's a well known feature I'm not sure who keeps painting it.
