Really? Who's paying for something that will have 4 weeks of the year usage. We've just had a new tax enforced because we're skint. If we're skint then we don't buy more new things. If we're not skint we don't need a new tax.

Sorry, but I'm utterly fed up of granite paving stones, new Christmas decorations and the like in a time of supposed austerity.

I couldn't agree more - although you must realize that if they have a "budget" to spend - spend it they must - after all - it's only (your) money....

Will it only get used for the 4 weeks? Is there any way they could design something that could be used more often, for other purposes as well? It could be hired out for other events and earn some money maybe? Just looked at the article again..

It is Council of Ministers policy on motor sports to further develop existing events.

Of course it would cost at least £3M in consultancy fees to decide if it could be done before it gets the go ahead as is usual with any local council - sorry it's a government (there goes my chance of a work permit )

There's no mention in that article so we'll have to find the proposal itself to see the scale of investment, but I think if the costs were controlled (local council ) then it could pay for itself in a short space of time compared to the expense of the temporary structures that have to be built and dismantled. Are the temporaries owned by the govt. or are they hired for the event? Either way that is not going to be a cheap deal. It needs to be more specific to know whether it makes financial sense, and what other infrastructure changes would have to be made locally for it to be viable.
And if it's going to be permanent, why are they already stating that it will only be used "to utilise the facility during the intervening period, between the bookend events of May and September, for occasional weekend presentations" - they should be trying to use it every weekend and if they can manage it get it used every day. Race circuits now can't survive by only being used at weekends, they're busy every day possible to bring return on the investment.

It's a good idea in principle. And yes, in the long term makes more financial sense than leasing and putting up a temporary structure year on year. However...times are lean so good ideas have to wait.

I really don't see government finances as being different to my household, except on a bigger scale (the government, not my housekeeping!). When things are tight you forego the luxuries, the things that would be a good idea one day.

Perhaps Joe, the new toilet tax is going to be used for building it. Because most of the time other than TT or Manx GP thats all it will be full of. As you say it will take about 5 years,lots of off island jollies a couple of million quid to decide what to do. Hard life running our country!!

no i didnt, i made that up but it wouldnt surprise me if they did. There are toilets over here and in nthe continent where it costs to spend a penny
