Re: Bring back morning practice
Quite right - not so much fun on a foggy morning - but still a brilliant experience - and a cup of tea in "the tent" to look forward to - then back to kip for a couple of hours...oldbelly wrote:Morning practice made the TT.
It seems the way the weather has been in recent years - it can be nigh on impossible for a newcomer to qualify - especially if they have mechanical problems...
2 strokes are the future...

Re: Bring back morning practice
Morning Practice was enjoyable, even though it meant getting out of bed early enough to arrive at the grandstand in time to start scrutineering at 4 a.m. Had some great banter scrutineering at the morning practices. I think H & S involvement was the reason the morning practices were curtailed but, can someone explain how it's safer to have LESS practice time!!
No pleasure is worth giving up for the sake of two more years in a geriatric home.

Re: Bring back morning practice
It was becoming a struggle to get enough marshals when minimum manning levels were introduced.
I'm up for it though, used to love it, or have I forgotten what a struggle it was to get up after a few shandies the night before.

Re: Bring back morning practice
Less practice does not need explaining but with a circuit like the IOM you need to have plenty
I suspect that the lack of marshalls for early morning practice and the disruption of closing the roads twice a day will have some bearing on the situation
Maybe the races need to be delayed a day or so with the descision being made early in the morning predicting the weather however on an island will not be an easy matter especially the last couple of years
Would it be possible to have a newcomers practice during the MGP for those that have not done say 10 laps the chances of getting bad weather twice a year is lessened
I agree that stopping early morning practice has certainly changed forever the very atmosphere that makes the TT so exiting
Good luck to everyone this year

Re: Bring back morning practice
Early morning sessions were meant to give competitors time to make adjustments to their machines before the next early morning session...This had been the way since the late twenties when it was decided that it may be a better option to close the roads to general traffic after a number of fancied riders were involved in accidents with local traffic going about their business.
Personally, I have never managed to find a better laxative than the thought of the first early morning practice session of any TT I was involved in, but the current format suits most of the residents who have to go to work as well as the 'Come overs' who have the time to enjoy the island during the day yet get to their chosen spot to see the evening practice from 6.20pm to 9pm each day weather permitting....
And just incase we have a week such as the last one a provision is now in place so racing can take place on each and every day from the 1st -8th June to complete the programme..
Personally, I loved the Thursday afternoons (1pm-5pm) of practice week when generally the fast laps were posted from each class...
TBH, I can't see a return to early sessions mainly due to some residents who would object to the noise at such a silly hour...
