Funny how you refer to it as the A1, which indeed it is. Just we wouldn't! I bet hardly any locals know the roads by number.

Ah, I live IN a house but ON a road...different thing! Although I'm never sure if I live in or on the Isle of Man.

When we lived (?) on Canvey Island it was always 'on' but when in London it was 'in'. Don't suppose that helps much ...
