TT Van Checks
I have just returned to the Island after being away at a race meeting after getting of the Boat in Douglas I was pulled over by the Police and told I was to have my van checked over. I disputed this request until told the reasons, the reasons given is that they wanted to know what weight the van was with bikes in and this was to be done to create a data base for the TT week.

I have a Iveco 35s12 van, in the van was one CBR600, 3 sets of wheels and associated tools ect. On the scales the van with drive and passenger came in at 3612kgs, I was then told The van was overweight and could not go on the public roads.

I have been traveling with the IOMSP with this van and 2 bikes for the past two seasons without any problems and it has nothing todo with the landing stage or ramps at any of the ports. What the F are they trying to do.

The local IOM Police have just phoned me after having checked my van getting of the boat tonight. They have confirmed that My Iveco 35s12 with 1 bike , wheels and tools ect will not be allowed to leave the port until the weight is reduced to its plate.

They have also said that all vans coming into the IOM on the lead up to TT will be put on the scales and any van over the limit will be refused entry.

That'll cause a headache for most then!

As if racing is not sufficiently difficult at present

In UK they must allow 5% tolerance as per manafacturing tolerances.
I presume they wish to raise money.
VOSA are now self funding and are issuing Fixed penalty fines. £120 for being 5% - 10% overwieght.
Your van should have a payload of 1200kg ish depending on engine and wheelbase.
This will not include fuel or people.
So cbr 200kg people 200kg tools 200kg wheels 100kg fuel if full 60kg =760kg
I would suggest they do not use comedy scales.
A trip to an independent weighbridge will sufice.
Any way just dump passenger and some stuff at side of road and come back for it i.e. two trips in totally legallity.

Team JH also had an issue with their truck on the way to Knockhill a while back and had to get hold of another van to split the load, it seems plod/VOSA are getting tighter and tighter on this.

It would definitely pay to get to a weighbridge beforehand and check, you don't need the hassle on the way out of having to split the load - and possibly more ferry costs would that imply? - to get stuff onto the Island.

and of cause not to overload the van no excuse there's plenty of weigh bridges around

Well the first article got me in a panic as I`m off to the TT next week with 5 trail bikes in my van,So I went to my friendly garage that MOT`s everything from bikes to vans, I`ve got a Citroen Relay 1800d, mwb, hightop,he showed me under the bonnet by the rad a plate with weights on, first was 3.5 tonnes,on his chart for calculating brakes my van weighed in at 1800kgs, therefore giving me an allowable capacity of 1700kgs, therefore making the 3.5 tonnes,Interestingly the second weight on the bonnet plate was 5.5
tonnes, this is my total maximum if I was towing as well.It would seem that if stopped ask the old Bill to take you to a weighbridge. Happy TT all

Only other option is dont go, and then they can't do you. and they would miss out on all the options of people visiting and spending.and racers so no racing. then they may leave you alone.

Yes, I thought it was a good way to encourage people over to the TT,wonder if the manx Government is aware.
