Worlds Sprint report from Mark Walters
“Payne and Rousseau take win”
It was very dull and cool but dry for the start of the 12 lap “sprint race” in Oschersleben.
As the smoke from the spectators flares had cleared the lights went out, and it was Markus Schlosser and Luca Schmidt who capitalized on their pole position to take the lead from Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau, Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes were right on the tail of Payne and Rousseau. Bennie Streuer and Kevin Kolsch were next up with Pekka Paivarinta and Adam Christie behind, Sam and Tom Christie were with Paivarinta and Christie, Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement were right with the Christie Brothers. There was a very small gap and it was Lukas Wyssen and Ema Salmon leading Ted and Vincent Peugeot with the Laidlow Brothers Sam and Jack next up. Luke Williams and Ruben Janssens were trying to get a pass on Lennard Gottlich and Lucas Kreig but this was not happening. Rupert Archer and Thomas Hofer were next up with Patrick Werkstetter and Valentin Pirat alongside. Paul Leglise and Marjorie Cescutti were fending off Markus Venus and Ondrej Sedlacek. Kevin cable and Charlie Richardson were just in front of Pierre Leguen and Leopold Rouby. Rogier Weekers and Remco Moes, Raymond and Calvin Leijdekkers brought up the rear of the field.
As things were settling down after the first laps of the race, the first seven teams were all in station with not a lot in it. There was a small gap and Wyssen and Salmon were managing to keep in front of the Laidlow Brothers and the Peugeot’s, who were now starting to battle against each another, but the Laidlow Brothers did have a go at getting by Wyssen and Salmon but just could not make it stick, so they were left battling with the Peugeot’s.
Lap five saw Archer and Hofer DNF with technical problems, their race was run.
Half distance the top four teams had made a gap on the perusing three teams, but also Ellis and Clement were getting left too. Reeves and Wilkes were managing to stay in touch with Schlosser and Schmidt and Payne and Rousseau, but they were having problems of their own, from lap four Reeves was having problems selecting fourth gear, it would engage then it would jump out, but the team were managing it well, keeping Streuer and Kolsch behind. There was a gap now too for Paivarinta and Christie who were keeping the Christie Brothers Sam and Tom behind, but these two teams were losing touch to the front four. Ellis and Clement were starting to have a lonely race out on their own, but in a safe seventh.
Lap seven saw a change at the front for the lead, Schlosser and Schmidt were in amongst back markers, and this gave Payne and Rousseau the opportunity to pass. When Payne and Rousseau got out in the lead they started to make a small gap to Schlosser and Schmidt, there was no way Schlosser and Schmidt could get back with Payne and Rousseau.
Lap eleven saw Leglise and Cescutti DNF, unfortunate for them a bit close to a raised rumble strip.
It was a delighted Payne and Rousseau who took the race win from Schlosser and Schmidt who were just over four seconds down at the chequred flag.
Reeves and Wilkes were to stay out in front of Streuer and Kolsch to take third, but only just.
The Christie Brothers Sam and Tom tried to get passed Paivarinta and Christie, but in the end it was Paivarinta and Christie who took fifth, Ellis and Clement took a lonely seventh.
A good race for 8th, 9th and 10th between Wyssen/Salmon, The Laidlow Brothers and the Peugeot’s.
Williams and Janssens got the better of Gottlich and Krieg to take a good eleventh.
Werkstetter and Pirat were out on their own for thirteenth.
There was a good gap to the next team of Cable and Richardson who took fourteenth place, Venus and Sedlacek took fifteenth.
Leguen and Rouby, Weekers and Moes, and Leijdekkers/Leijdekkers took 16th, 17th, and 18th respectfully.
There will be a 21 lap race tomorrow, starting at 14:20 local time.
