Race report from Mark Walters for the first race

“Ellis and Clement in control”

Another hot day as the sidecar teams took to the track for the first 18 lap race at the “Automotodrom Grobnik” in Croatia.

The lights went out, and straight away it was pole sitters Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement who took control from the front. Stephen Kershaw and Ryan Charlwood were in the leading pair’s wheel tracks with Markus Schlosser and Marcel Fries behind Kershaw and Charlwood. Bennie Streuer and Kevin Kolsch were behind Schlosser and Fries. Harry Payne and Mark Wilkes were next up with Lukas Wyssen and Thomas Hofer next. The Christie Brothers Sam and Tom were next with Ted and Vincent Peugeot next; Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson were next with Claude Vinet and Sebastien Arifon at the back.

These positions were not to change for the first few laps. Ellis and Clement were out in front with Kershaw and Charlwood second, these two teams were pulling away from the rest of the field.

It was close for third, fourth and fifth place. Schlosser and Fries were third, but were not able to make any inroads on the leading two teams. Payne and Wilkes were putting pressure on Streuer and Kolsch for fourth, this was to go for a couple of laps when Payne and Wilkes took the opportunity to make a great pass on Streuer and Kolsch nipping up the inside on the downhill section of the track.

The battle behind them was pretty well spaced out. The Peugeot’s managed to get by Wyssen and Hofer and immediately started to pull away leaving Wyssen/Hofer fending off the Christie Brothers. Wyssen/Hofer got the hurry on and started to make a gap on the Christie boys and this was how the remainder of the race would turn out for these three teams.

Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson were keeping Vinet and Arifon at bay throughout the race, but Vinet and Arifon tried their hardest to pass many times on the long start finish straight, but Cable/Richardson had all things in control.

At the front, Ellis and Clement were well in control of the race keeping a good gap between them and Kershaw/Charlwood who in turn were well in control of their second place. Schlosser and Fries were in a good third but it was visible that Payne and Wilkes once passed Streuer and Kolsch were making inroads to the third place team. Schlosser and Fries did not seem to be getting good drive out of the corners which was slowing their pace letting Payne and Wilkes catch.

Getting to the end of the race the leading teams started to catch and pass Vinet/Arifon, Cable and Richardson. With waved blue flags the top three teams got by, but lap 14 was to see the red flags out and the race was stopped.

Streuer and Kolsch made a move on Cable and Richardson, unfortunately there was contact between the two teams resulting in Streuer and Kolsch spinning their machine off the track then turning upside down. Passenger Kolsch managed to upright the machine letting Streuer crawl out, but he was in pain, crouched down on the grass. He was to be taken to hospital for checks.

Cable and Richardson were to continue but they too were to run off track when their back tyre had punctured in the incident.

The race was declared, Ellis and Clement took the win from Kershaw and Charlwood, and the two teams were delighted with their result.

Schlosser and Fries were happy with their third place but will be looking at what problem they have with their machine.

A good result for Payne and Wilkes, they took fourth, if the race had ran the distance it might have been different though.

Another good result for the father and son team of Ted and Vincent Peugeot, they took fifth.

Wyssen and Hofer were to take sixth, the team were happy but thought they should have been more aggressive from the start.

The Christie Brothers Sam and Tom were very happy with their seventh place and hope tomorrow will be the same if not better.

Vinet and Arifon took eighth place, the team were happy with this but passenger Arifon is suffering with pain in his back.

Tomorrow will be the second 18 lap race which will start at 11.50 local time.

Race report for race two from Mark Walters

“Kershaw and Charlwood keep cool in the baking heat”

After yesterday’s crash Bennie Streuer and Kevin Kolsch did not start the race, Streuer was advised not to race by doctors.

As the lights went out for the second 18 lap race in the baking heat of Croatia, it was Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement who got the run from the line, Stephen Kershaw and Ryan Charlwood were holding second but Markus Schlosser and Marcel Fries out dragged them to the first corner. Harry Payne and Mark Wilkes slotted into fourth with Lukas Wyssen and Thomas Hofer fifth. Ted and Vincent Peugeot were in sixth. Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson were in seventh with Sam and Tom Christie in eighth, Claude Vinet and Sebastien Arifon were ninth.

Lap two saw Ellis and Clement in the lead with Kershaw and Charlwood second, the rest of the field went by, but Schlosser/Fries were way at the back of the field and going slowly. They had clutch problems, Schlosser managed to wrestle with the clutch cable and sort the problem, their race was back on.

Mid distance all the sidecar teams were holding station but Schlosser/Fries were on a charge making up places. Ellis/Clement had a good lead over Kershaw/Charlwood who in turn had a good lead over the now third place team of Payne/Wilkes, Ted and Vincent Peugeot were in a good third place with a good gap over Wyssen and Hofer who also had a good gap over the Christie Brothers Sam and Tom, Schlosser/Fries were up with the Christie’s by now after passing Vinet/Arifon and Cable/Richardson.

Lap 9, drama for Ellis and Clement, they were to pull into pit lane with a problem letting Kershaw/Charlwood take the lead with Payne/Wilkes second and the Peugeot’s third.

Lap 10 saw Cable and Richardson pull off track with a mechanical problem, they were to DNF.

Schlosser and Fries had the hammer down and were catching teams and passing, they were now up to fourth place but there was a fair gap to the third place team of the Peugeot’s.

Ellis and Clement were to rejoin the race but were two laps down on the rest of the field, they tried to soldier on to the end of the race, but they were to pull back into pit lane on lap 14 for a DNF. They had a problem with front of their machine, but were not sure what the problem was.

At the front Kershaw and Charlwood were keeping their cool, keeping a steady gap to the second place team of Payne and Wilkes. The Peugeot’s were now getting pressure from a fast charging Schlosser and Fries who had made their way up to fourth place. The pass was inevitable, Schlosser/Fries were up to third place, but there was no way they could catch the second place team of Payne and Wilkes.

As the chequred flag came out a delighted Kershaw and Charlwood punched the air as the crossed the line for a great win. Payne and Wilkes were overjoyed with their second place. Schlosser and Fries picked up the pieces from a nearly disastrous start and took third place, they were so happy with this result.

It was so close for Ted and Vincent Peugeot to getting on the podium but it was not to be this time, they took a great fourth place.

Wyssen and Hofer took a good fifth place and really enjoyed the race and their machine felt good throughout the race.

The Christie Brothers Sam and Tom took sixth place, they were really happy with this result, it was a hard race for them though, the heat and not being used to the long race distance.

Vinet and Arifon took seventh place, the team were happy, but it too was a hard race for them.

The next round will be at Donington Park, England, with World Super Bikes, that will be in July.
