WELSH LOCKDOWN RULES RESULT IN CANCELLATION OF WIRRAL 100’S ANGLESEY MEETING SCHEDULED FOR 26th & 27th JUNE

After the success of its Oulton Park meeting in April, the Wirral Hundred club is hugely disappointed to announce the cancellation of its race meeting at Anglesey scheduled for the weekend of 26th & 27th June; this would have included rounds of the Club’s championships, together with rounds of the ACU British F2 Sidecar, FSRA Pre-Injection Sidecar, and Lansdowne British GP championships.

There had been hopes that the Welsh Government was about to agree to an easing of its Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, sufficient to enable road-racing events at permanent circuits to take place in June. Sadly this ‘easing’ only allows events to have up to 50 competitors, clearly nowhere near enough for clubs to run viable road-race meetings.

In England, successful events are taking place, in accordance with the ACU risk assessment guidelines and in compliance with social-distancing and PPE rules - and with no restrictions on rider numbers. With the success of the vaccination programme and with the large reduction in infections across both England and Wales, it is difficult to understand the disparity between the two governments’ approach to outdoor activities, and to motorsport in particular.

The Club and the Anglesey Circuit will continue to press for a resumption in racing activities as soon as possible. Wales is due next to move from its Covid alert level 2 (medium risk) to level 1 (low risk), but there is no certainty over the timing of this or over the extent of the further easing of the lockdown rules. The sincere hope is that the changes will be sufficient to enable our race meeting on 31st July & 1st August to take place, followed in due course by that on 9th & 10th October. The regulations and entry forms for these two race meetings are ready for publication and the Club will make a further announcement as soon as it is able.
