At present I'm using a Canon EOS30D but did start with the Canon EOS300D when I got started.
Go for an entry level D-SLR, OK bit bigger than a point and shoot but in general more flexible. Allows you to add lenses as and when you can afford them and if you get hooked and by a semi-pro D-SLR ...
