    Slovakiaring Welcomes World Sidecars


    It seems like only yesterday since the “FIM World Sidecar Championship” teams kicked off their 2018 season in Le-Mans, but that is all in the past. The teams are heading to a new circuit to them. The 5.922km “Slovakia Ring” will welcome the sidecar teams. Opened in 2009, the fast, mainly right hand corner circuit is a short 35km from the capital Bratislava. As like in Le-Mans the sidecars will be supporting the “FIM, Endurance World Championship”.

    Birchall Brothers Rule in Le-Mans.

    As the lights went out for the first race of the 2017 “FIM Sidecar World Championship”, it was John Holden and Mark Wilkes on their “Barnes/Sillicon Racing” LCR, Kawasaki who got the hole shot into the first complex of corners, this was to be short lived though as Ben and Tom Birchall on their “Birchall Racing” LCR, Yamaha, nipped up the inside of Holden/Wilkes in the first chicane. Right behind the Birchalls was Pekka Paivarinta and Kirsi Kainulainen on their “44-Racing” LCR, Honda. Paivarinta and Kainulainen tried their best to follow the Birchall Brothers past Holden and Wilkes but it was not to happen. It was not till three corners later that Paivarinta and Kainulainen managed to nip pass when Holden/Wilkes left a small space. By this time Bennie Streuer and Kevin Rousseau on their “Team Streuer” LCR, Honda, were right on the tail of Holden/Wilkes.

    The 2017 “FIM Sidecar World Championship” gets under way at the world famous 4,185km “Bugatti Circuit” at Le-Mans, France, over the Easter weekend. The World Sidecars will be supporting the famous “24 Houres Motos” for solo motorcycles.


    New rules starting from 2017 means that all the top sidecar teams who were running 1000cc engines had to change to 600cc engines over the winter break. Some teams who ran 600cc engines in short tubular chassis last season have changed to the longer monocoque constructed chassis, but most have just had to change to the 600cc engine.
