After what seems to have been a long winter, the wait is over. Next weekend (14-17 April) the Brands Hatch Indy circuit will resonate to the sound of the strongest entry of sidecars in the history of the series. New rules which allow 600cc outfits to compete on level terms with their 1000cc big brothers have proved to be an outstanding success and have attracted unprecedented levels of pre-season registrations.

Further rule changes include a “reverse grid” mechanism which will see the top ten finishers, regardless of capacity, line up for race two in reverse order.
Add to this the fact that the Sunday race will be shown live on Eurosport TV mid-afternoon between the two BSB races, and a maximum number of spectators will therefore witness the action.

Situated mid-way between Poitiers and Limoges in central France, the circuit of Val de Vienne proved to be the ideal platform for the first proper test ahead of the 2017 British Sidecar Championship.. Those crews who attended Carlo's Trainingslager found the four days track action invaluable, and gave them a flying start to the new season. As a result, this year's event was even more popular, with a strong British contingent making the trip.

Run as an open test week for solos and sidecars, the entry list was mightily impressive, with virtually all the top crews from across Europe on track. Former World Champions included Tim and Tristan Reeves, the Birchall Brothers and Bennie Streuer/Geert Koerts. Our own British Champions Ricky Stevens and Ryan Charlwood headed the UK line-up of around eighty teams, comprising both 1000cc and 600cc competitors. Several new faces showed up to demonstrate their skills for the first time in anger.

The entry list for the Hyundai British Championship is also at record levels, and clearly the teams at the top of that list understood the importance of track time in France.

An impressive thirty-eight outfits have signalled their intentions to contest most of the rounds, with a hard core of twenty-eight signed up for the entire series. This is indeed great news for the hordes of sidecar fans at trackside and at home. The over-riding factor is the return of several top names along with an influx of new talent. After their horrific crash at the Donington Park round in September which caused the Maidstone Blue Machinery/Fileder system/ AMR British Formula one sidecar team to miss the last round at Assen in Holland. Driver Matt MacLaurin and passenger Adrian Hope returned to action at the final round of the British Formula one Championship at the weekend at the iconic 2.4 mile Brands Hatch GP circuit. Even with missing the last three races the pair have had another great season competing at the highest level and are still in ninth place in the championship and are hoping for a top ten finish in the championship. With double points up for grabs in the two races they had it all to play for.
With the damage to their 1000 cc Yamaha powered machine fixed and their injuries healed the pair know and love this circuit so spirits were high for the two ten lap races on Saturday in front of a big British Superbike crowd. With the championship title still to be decided amongst the top four sidecar teams the racing would again be at the highest standard. Friday's practice and qualifying saw Matt and Adrian qualify in thirteth place on the large grid.
With a gearbox problem which gave them only four gears instead of six the pair finished in a great eleventh place and they also recorded their fastest ever lap around the circuit in twenty years of racing there. Saturday's weather then played it's part as the heavens opened and the light failed so the race was postponed until Sunday morning also reducing it to eight laps. On a very greasy track Matt and Adrian had a terrible start going onto the grass which caused them to be at the back of the race. With a superb performance they moved through the field finishing in seventh place, which gave them ninth place in the final championship table. Speaking in the paddock afterwards Matt said. "It's has been another great season and we have now shown that we can be a top ten team, something we wanted to achieve at the start of the year." Adrian added "We have shown we can compete with World and British champions on one of the oldest engined sidecars out there. I'm so pleased for all the team for all the hard work that has gone in over the season."

Things didn't go quite to plan for Birchall Racing at Brands Hatch where they were to contest the two final races in the British Sidecar 600 cup but due to an unfortunate electrical problem they were unable to resolve, Ben and Tom were unable to race.

But it was not all bad news as multi TT winner Michael Dunlop with passenger Dan Sayle took command of the Birchall Racing F2 outfit and completed both races within the top six.

Sleaford F1 Sidecar driver with Scottish passenger Jimmy Connell travelled to Brands Hatch for the season finale of the British F1 Sidecar championship where the two races attracted double points. Gary and Jimmy scored a strong 10th place in race one and eighth in the second encounter to xo plate their season in an overall position of eighth on 156 points.

After qualifying in seventh place Gary and Jimmy were due to start the first 10 lap encounter from the fourth row but a problem on the warm up lap forced them to start the race from pit lane joining the rest of the 31 strong grid as they passed the end of the straight.
