The vastly experienced Simon Gilbert and Carl Morgan will make a return to top-flight sidecar racing action in 2018 under the Draper Racing banner.
Draper Racing, under Team Manager Bill Philp, himself a former sidecar racer, currently fields Aaron Clarke in National Superstock 600, and Bill's son Tommy in the British Supersport Championship.
DraperVent climate control systems, the main title sponsor of the team, has steadily increased its involvement in recent seasons, and this latest development further bolsters the line-up, whilst significantly increasing exposure for the brand.
Simon and Carl will campaign an ex-Kevin Cable Yamaha powered LCR, which they take delivery of in the next few days. The remainder of the 2017 season will be spent on preparing the outfit and themselves for action.
A strict diet and training regime is an essential part of the preparations, as both rider and passenger know they are coming into a championship with strength in depth, and the level of competition is stronger now than even before. This is another example of a leading Superbike or Supersport team becoming involved in the fantastic spectacle of sidecar racing.
It is hoped that the new team will be ready for a shake-down at the final round of the 2017 Championship at Brands Hatch in October.
Roger Body of RKB-F1, promoters of the championship is delighted with the news. “We have known both Bill Philp and Simon Gilbert over many years, and they both understand what it takes to race a sidecar outfit. This partnership is great news for the championship, and is one more indication that solo teams now recognise the value that sidecar racing brings to their profile”.
