Maria Costello and her sidecar passenger Kirsty Hauxwell took 4th in class in the final sidecar race at Aintree on Saturday, 15th July, earning silverware and recording the pair’s best finish yet as an all-female sidecar team.

The duo took advantage of a free weekend in the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship to attend the Ace of Aintree event, making the most of valuable track-time with their JG Speedfit / Cool Milk LCR sidecar outfit. Despite its being Hauxwell’s local track, racing at Aintree was a new experience for Maria, as was running on Avon’s wet tyres when wet weather predominated.

Mansfield brothers Ben and Tom Birchall contested the two races in the Isle of Man Southern 100 F2 Sidecar class last week resulting in a resounding win in the first race and a DNF in the Championship race on Thursday.

Starting the first race on Wednesday from a second row grid position the Mitchells of Mansfield supported riders got a good start to the six lap Ace Hire and Sales F2 Sidecar event to nip through into second place. As they crossed the line to start lap two there was less than a second separating the first four outfits with all four running inside the existing lap record.

The JG Speedfit/Cool Milk all-female sidecar team of Maria Costello and Kirsty Hauxwell, made their Mallory Park debut in Round 5 of the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship.

With over 20 years of road racing experience, Maria Costello is well known to motorsport aficionados for her many achievements, including her MBE for services to motorcycling and achieving the first female podium in a race around the Isle of Man TT.

Jen and Giles Stainton travelled to Anglesey for a round of the Wirral club championship where they rode to a clutch of fourth places in the F2 Sidecar races recently.

Saturday morning was spent familiarising themselves with the circuit layout as they had only been there once before and that was a year ago.

Qualifying saw the husband and wife team from Upton finish the session in seventh place and Jen commented: “Our competition for the weekend was really strong, and surrounded by class teams we were keen to get out and learn as much as we could on the Coastal circuit. We achieved a 1m 24s in qualifying but knew that our gearing wasn't quite right and also felt that we should make some adjustments to tyre pressure and suspension.”

Gloriously sunny weather prevailed for Saturday qualifying with Tim and Tristan Reeves once again claiming pole.
It was far from a runaway result this time though, as Steve Kershaw and Stuart Clark came to within two-tenths of denying them the place. Anxious to make up for a disappointing Snetterton, Kershaw had the Express Tyres/Blinkbonny Kawasaki on the stop as he completed more laps than anyone else in his efforts to claim the pole.
Sensationally, the Birchall brothers, Ben and Tom used the 600 Yamaha to great effect just a further one-tenth back in third.
Andy Peach/Ken Edwards also pulled off a great result winning the “Battle of the Suzukis” with a stunning fourth ahead of the Stalker Chris Walker/Ashley Hawes (Santander Salt Kawasaki).

Mansfield sidecar racers Ben and Tom Birchall rode to a brace of wins in a round of the British 600cc Sidecar championship at Snetterton at the weekend and move to fourth in the rider standings after contesting just two rounds (three races) in the series.

The Mitchells of Mansfield supported brothers secured third place in qualifying in a mixed grid of F1 and 600cc outfits and were fastest in their class and as the first of two races got underway the six times TT winners slotted into fourth place overall before moving up to third at the half way stage of the 12 lap affair. They maintained third place throughout the remainder of the race to take the chequered flag as comfortable winners in the 600 class with Ellis/Richardson finishing in second place some distance behind.
