HARRISON TOPS THE LEADERBOARD ON DAY 3 OF THE ISLE OF MAN TT RACES

From TT Press Office

After a delay of almost thirty minutes due to an incident in the Supersport and Supertwin classes, the Sidecars were able to get out onto the Mountain Course for the first time since Sunday afternoon but with both time and light disappearing, it was only for one lap.

As expected, the Birchalls, on the Haith Honda, set the pace through all the sectors but Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley (FHO Racing) were staying in touch but both Dave Molyneux/Darryl Gibson (DMR) and John Holden/Jason Pitt (Barnes Racin) stopped, at Cronk-y-Voddy and Sulby respectively.

The latter got going but leading the way on the road were the Birchalls and they completed their solitary lap at 115.663mph, not surprisingly the quickest of the week so far. Founds/Walmsley slotted into second, 13.7s adrift at 114.326mph but ahead of Ryan and Callum Crowe (112.545), Lewis Blackstock/Patrick Rosney (111.164) and Tim Reeves/Kevin Rousseau (110.768).

Newcomers Harry Payne/Mark Wilkes and Lee Crawford/Scott Hardie were next up at 109.733mph and 109.709mph respectively.

Road racing returns to the calendar and Maria produces a new personal best lap time.

Maria Costello MBE made a superb return to road racing as she matched her best finish and put in a new personal best lap time at the 2022 Northwest 200 despite a difficult start.

Maria was delighted to be returning to her beloved sport at the North West 200 event onboard the Mark Coverdale Paton Supertwin race bike after almost three years of absence due to the pandemic.

Her initial hopes felt dashed when the race bike was delayed and she received it less than week before leaving for Northern Ireland.

Two victories for reigning champions, Lee Crawford / Scott Hardie (LCR Suzuki) closed the gap at the top of the standings to a mere four points behind early season pace-setters Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley (LCR Honda). Founds – who had Jake Lowther deputising for Walmsley – had to settle for a brace of runners-up placings in what were two excellent encounters. Meanwhile, Rob Atkinson / Mark Middleton continued their 100% record in the F2 Cup, scoring maximum points with two victories in class.

Following an eventful season opener at Brands Hatch, the series resumes at Donington Park on the 14th and 15th May, once again with host club N.G.R.R.C..

The weekend will not only see teams fiercely battling for championship points, but the winners of race two will be awarded the “Bill Boddice Trophy”, which reigning champions Lee Crawford / Scott Hardie (LCR Suzuki) will be hoping to defend having taken two dominant wins at this meeting last season. However, they did not have things all their own way at Brands, where Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley (LCR Honda) took a brace of wins to top the standings by fourteen points.
