COSTELLO ENJOYS RETURN TO CAR RACING WITH HRDC

Maria Costello MBE swapped to racing four wheels and claimed a successful 10th place in the last round of the HRDC ‘Classic Alfa Challenge’ at Lydden Hill.

The Northamptonshire racer, better known for her record-breaking efforts on two and three wheels, took to the ‘Revivalist’ Alfa Romeo 116 Giulietta to enjoy a fantastic event on four wheels run by The Historic Racing Drivers Club.

Costello recorded a fastest lap of 53.141 seconds as she finished 10th behind winner Richard Merrell in an Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Junior.

And she was going well in her next race before technical difficulties caused her to stop with three laps remaining of the 12-lap race, her fastest lap time bettering two of the top-10 finishers.

“We had a few technical difficulties to overcome during the day but the Westbourne squad were straight on the case,” said a delighted Costello.

“I just love these people. We have the best times and they’re making this difficult year so much better!

“The HRDC is a super friendly club with a great atmosphere in the paddock. I haven’t been to Lydden for what feels like a lifetime but I felt like it all just clicked and it was so much fun getting to grips with the Alfa again, especially as we only managed four laps at the last event.

“Massive thanks to HRDC Race Director Julius Thurgood for making it possible and to my main mechanic Kevin and all the Westbourne Motorsport gang for all their hard work and the top banter – I haven’t laughed so much in ages.”

Maria would like to extend special thanks to the HRDC, Westbourne Motorsport, NGK Spark Plugs & Ram Safety Solutions.

She will return to the HRDC ‘Classic Alfa Challenge’ grid at Castle Combe Autumn Classic on the 4th October.
